Katarina Witt began to ice skate when she was five. Soon, her talents became apparent and she was accepted into Karl-Marx-Stadt's school for special needs. In this school, she met their coach Jutta Muller. Witt was able to make her mark in 1982, after she was second in the World Championships at Copenhagen. Her elegance and grace caught everyone's attention at that time, and from then forward she began to dominate the competition. Olympic success In Sarajevo, at the Sarajevo Winter Games in 1984, Katarina won the gold medal for figure skating in women's after a fiercely contested contest. It was her victory from four years prior that was a bit more tense. Actually, she didn't win the contest for free skating, however, she was awarded gold for her results during the compulsory figure and short program. Witt is the first figure skater female who has won the same competition twice, since Sonja Heine. Hall of Fame After enjoying great success in the field of acting, Witt returned to the figure skating sport to take part in the 1994 Lillehammer Winter Games. The crowd was captivated by her, despite the fact that she only was seventh. Witt's admission into the World Figure Skating Hall of Fame was held in 1995.
